After Forever

Samuel B. Duff 1981 (Michigan)

Head bowed
Full of stir and noise
Squinting
Almost eyes shut
A tear rips down my cheek
Carves a scar
From my soul
Oh, my soul
Out the window
Glinting in the light
Salt and blood
Only To fall away
Half-Forgotten
And vanish
I bite it back
I choke on it
And of all the things I’m thinking
Stirred up
A live wire buzzing
A cauldron of roiling feeling
Gilt and Jade and Jet
I wonder if one can taste a soul?
Bitter,
Or sweet, do you think?
Are the words
Hanging in my mind
Because of that tear
I grab at this anomaly
Of a thought
Desperately
Because it hurts less than
All of the things I usually see
It’s less ugly
than what I usually think
What a strange mourning
Is it though?
So far
It seems like any other
Just Like any other day
Hours to go
Hours to go
Almost eternity before I’ll sleep
Onwards I go
Onwards I go
After forever
Then
I’ll weep
