Harvest Night

The fields lie empty of life once more
Readying for slumber after Summer’s work
Full moon rises, lighting the cool night
As the night’s creatures glean the last leavings
Storing their treasures deep in their nests

Swirling leaves of every color drift to the ground
Trees sigh softly, swaying on the breeze
Carrying scents of pumpkin, spices, apples, and corn
The barn is alive as the town gathers
Food offerings in plenty weigh down trestle tables

Laughter amidst music’s bright serenade
Tapping footsteps of the spiral dance
Echo with the rhythm of past and present
Lovers kiss on the moonlit path through the garden
As they stroll arm in arm, away from prying eyes

Wine tasted and appreciated; many cups raised
Life toasted and celebrated, another season is over
Light balances with dark,
The crops are finally in
The harvest is complete

Carla J Suggs

Masters in English/Creative Writing Currently writing several tales, one of which is the beginning of a science fiction series. I also write YA, romance, and fantasy; not necessarily in that order. I used to be an active poet on the old site. Luckily, I saved my poetry before the site tanked. I'm going to assume that all records of awards, publishing, and mentions are gone as well? A pity. more…
