Shields

John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)

Ruthie's in the Napa Valley
On a women-tasting tour
Every drop of enhancement
Serves a sparkly allure

Her brand new line of perfume
Will be coming out this fall
Delusional Allegation
Musk, with a hint of menthol

She wears it like a shield
Carries it like a sword
Buries it like a dagger
The minute she gets bored

She bounces for a dancer
She bounces for a dance
She dances for a bouncer
Where the only risk is chance

She believes there is tomorrow
There are no yesterdays
Communion is an orgasm
Raw naked flesh on serving trays

She wears you like hood ornaments
Drives you like a hearse
Buries you like a condom
In someone else's purse

A star tattooed upon her back
A dragonfly farther below
Butterfly on a garden patch
Raven tattoo on her window

Rings enchanted, horns implanted
Hold holy halos in place
A stud piercing her tongue
A fishhook in her face

She wears it like a shield
Carries it like a dart
Buries you like a dagger
In someone else's heart

And if you're looking for respect
She ain't really in the mood
You need vulnerability
What you get is attitude

We'll figure it out tomorrow
But for now, dig me a grave
And then fetch me a dagger
I've got a soul to save
