THE VERDILLAC (II)

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Like a monstrous bat
The Verdillac overhead,
Watching children play.

Crunching bones like fruit
In a beak with lethal teeth,
The Verdillac feeds.

Lethal eagle's beak
Upon a ratlike face,
That is the verdillac.

With legs like steel bands
Its wings tipped in evil claws,
The Verdillac flies.

Scales instead of feathers
Like some flying reptile,
Prehistoric beast?

Spying food below
The Verdillac shrilly shrieks,
As it swoops to kill.

Across the azure skies
The Verdillac soars
Seeking out human prey.

Just within our sight
A black pinprick barely seen,
The Verdillac spies.

Excited shrilling
As the Verdillac swoops upon,
Harmless sheep this time.

THE END
