Lightning and thunder

The night is dark, moonless
The clouds are thick in the sky
The wind is a howling hurricane
The cold sharp and tangible

Suddenly there is a glare
Like a sudden beam of spotlights
Cutting through the thick gloom
Leaving white flashing after-images

The electric bolt hammers a tree
In a resounding crunching crack
Splitting the heavy bole asunder
Tugging the shaggy roots free

Before the eyes clear up
Before the acacia tree topples
The air is rent with a heavy boom
That sends the heart going ka-boom

Thunder blasts the eardrums mercilessly
With beats that shake the bones
The weak of heart cower
And the fearful shudder

Thus the twin gods mutter
In their divine celestial rage
Making the skies weep in terror
Shedding torrents of rainy tears
