By the hearth

The fire crackled gratefully
Oblivious of the tension around
Protected by a wire mesh strong
   and stringy
Hiding in the recess that turns to
   a chimney upward

With a faraway look, to the horizon of his own
   thoughts
Static and immobile in his high oak chair
He came back and life was visible
   in him by looks
His eyes no longer reflected the fire
   with a glare
But danced behind his withdrawn sockets
Looking at me, he said, “ you are
   to be circumcised Jolare”
