Analysis of A worthless heritage [a true story]

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

There’s a corrugated-iron dunny
That renovators have just found,
It has stopped their renovations ‘cause
Heritage won’t let them tear it down.

It seems this iron dunny
Can be proven a hundred years old,
It’s an important part of our heritage
Or so we have been told.

The iron is all but rusted away
The wooden seat is broken in two,
But it’s an important part of our heritage
So what else could they do?

The iron container under the seat
Is full of brown, foul-smelling muck,
But finding this great heritage treasure
Was an important piece of luck.

Heritage Australia are all chuffed
At this important, wonderful find,
But the renovators who have lost their jobs
Are in a different frame of mind.

Still, it’s good to see that Heritage
Are taking their job so seriously,
Even if the Man in the street believes
Their minds work mysteriously.
