Analysis of Snow of Red

Snow is falling
from the sky above
and layers the ground
in glistening white.

I stare out the window,
my face up to the glass
while admiring the
spectacular wintry sight.

I run down the steps
pulling on my coat
and boots saying "I'm going
out to play for a while."

I sprint through the door
and get a shock of cold air
while I carelessly leap
into an enormous snow pile.

I taste the snowflakes
as they land on my tongue.
I lie in the snow
as I roll around in bliss.

"Come inside, Eve,"
Calls my dear mother.
"Time to set up the tree."
My ninth Christmas I can't miss.

Ornaments scatter on the floor;
a kaleidoscope of
many beautiful colors;
Colors of green, and my favorite, red.

I hang each ornament with care,
admiring each and every one.
When the tree was finished
this is what my mother says:

"Go out and play in the snow.
You can have friends over
and have a snowball fight."
I couldn't ask for more.

I happily agree to her suggestion
and call over my neighbors.
I see them walk over
so I merrily frolic out the door.

"Hi you guys-" I begin to say,
but I couldn't finish my sentence.
As I carelessly walk out the door
I didn't spot a patch of ice under my feet.

I trip headfirst,
falling flat on my skull.
I don't know what happens,
but the sidewalk and my head meet.

Things are going cloudy,
and then turn black.
I can't see a thing.
I don't know where I am.

A moment later I wake up,
however not seeing clearly.
All I know is I am on the ground
and people are panicking above.

I feel a dull pain
deep within my head.
I can't move a muscle.
I know something isn't right.

I try to speak,
but I feel extremely weak.
Is this really happening to me?
I force myself to move with all my might.

I try to look over
to see my surroundings.
All I see is snow
which is no longer white, but red.

There is my blood everywhere.
My mother is weeping.
I start to fade all over again.
This time is final. I knew it is the end.

Kaylene McLaughlin

I am an artist. I draw and paint mostly pop art related to musicians, and I play instruments including piano, harmonica, and I sing. I write my own songs sometimes, and when I add lyrics to the tune, that is my form of poetry. I love to write creative pieces. My musical side is a strong part of my soul, and this year, (09-10) I am going to perform in Disney World for 1 week with my school. I am currently a sophomore living in Wisconsin. I am very creative and fun.My main style in poetry is loss, love and most of all, addiction. I write about my personal experiences, including drug addictions. I write about thoughts that went through my mind during the difficult times of my addictions so hopefully people will read my work and realize the pain and suffering I caused and went through. Hopefully they won't go through what I went through. more…
