Femme, cette colombe au col rose et mouvant,
Que ta bouche entr'ouverte baise,
Ne l'avait pas sentie humecter si souvent
Son bec léger qui vibre d'aise.

Elle n'avait jamais reçu de toi tout bas
Les noms émus que tu lui donnes,
Ni jamais de tes doigts, à l'heure des repas,
Vu pleuvoir des graines si bonnes.

Elle n'avait jamais senti ton coeur frémir
Au vivant toucher de son aile,
Ni ses plumes trembler sous ton jeune soupir,
Ni tes larmes rouler sur elle.

Tu la laissais languir captive dans l'osier,
Et vainement d'un sanglot tendre,
D'un sanglot suppliant elle enflait son gosier :
Tu ne daignais jamais l'entendre.

Jamais les fleurs du vase où rêve le printemps
Ne furent si bien arrosées ;
Jamais, sur le lis pur et grave, si longtemps
Tes lèvres ne s'étaient posées.

Quel ancien souvenir ou quel récent amour,
Quel berceau, femme, ou quelle tombe,
A fait naître en ton coeur ce suprême retour
Vers ton lit et vers ta colombe ?
