Dans la grande chênaie, à l’ombre du coteau,
Je m’en vais en fumant, seul, à pas de tortue,
Par la petite route âpre et si peu battue,
Quand un pivert criard arrive d’un plateau.

— Son long bec, lui servant de vrille et de couteau.
Déloge les fourmis d’une branche tortue.
Dans la grande chênaie, à l’ombre du coteau,
Je m’en vais en fumant, seul, à pas de tortue.

Et gai, puisque mon crâne échappe à son étau,
J’admire sur un tronc, que la vieillesse tue,
Le joli perforeur dont la tête pointue
Se relève et s’abat comme un petit marteau,
Dans la grande chênaie, à l’ombre du coteau.
