Analysis of 'Bad Dog and Pollywog'

"They should install a revolving door,
For 'Bad dogs' like me, who have been here before.
Stupid humans don't know most dogs bark...
At lesser beings, in a stupid dog park.
And the other stupid humans didn't know that dogs 'chew'.
I think I might have pushed it, when I ate that last shoe."

"O.k., leash me up and treat me like a dog..
Just don't give me that kennel next to 'Pollywog'!;
Another victim of 'three strikes you're out'!
That wannabe dog-thing, with a white turned-up snout;
She'd be much better off in an old ladies lap...
With all of her whining, I won't get my nap."

"Oh, here they come now; all the 'lookieloos',
We're third on a pit-stop of 'doggie-zoos'.
I'll put on my smile, and try not to pee...
I get all excited, but they still walk past me.
That's o.k., I'm not really a 'Frisbee' dog...
But can someone please take this POLLYWOG?!"

"This old couple here is surely retired
I hope they see Sam, whose time has expired.
He needs a soft bed in a fire-lit home...
Not a cold concrete slab where he'll die all alone.
And can someone PLEASE take this POLLYWOG?
This mutant, lap-rat, wannabe-dog!?!"

"'Ellie the Shepherd' might need a cop's badge,
If you don't mind your face licked, there's always sweet Madge...
I call those two Rotties 'Bonnie' and 'Clyde', and the Mal-bred Scotties are 'Jeckle' and 'Hyde'"
'Bennie', the Pitty, isn't really a fighter...
I'd be more afraid of this ankle-biter;
When she lays on her stomach, she looks like a frog;
But her tail makes her more like a pollywog."

"Well, I think the day's ending, and we've run out of luck;
I was hoping that guy with the big shiny truck
Would come back inside and point right at me...
Oh... the life of a truck-dog riding high and free.
Fast food burgers, endless sunsets sitting side-by side...
Next to my buddy on our endless ride."

"OH PRAISE the dog-gods; my prayers have come true!
Wait...is he pointing at me, or pointing at you?
You fuzzy-faced rodent, wannabe dog!!
He's scooping up that POLLYWOG!
Well, at least I'll enjoy my pre-death nap!
Wait...my man is coming back!!
Leash in hand, he's pointing at me!!
Oh boy, be cool, HE'S POINTING AT ME!!!!

"My new name is 'Good Boy'', no longer 'Bad dog'
As I take my seat next to 'Pollywog'.
She smiled and winked when she looked at me..
Long-haul, truck-dogs...feeling free...
That dang mutant fuzz-thing...it was just my luck
To find I was sharing that big shiny truck.
I guess when she left me, she actually cried...he noticed the tears, so he went back inside.
Now it's burgers and sunsets...wait...she actually CRIED?!?
Well...just no more yip-yap, AND STAY ON YOUR SIDE!"

About this poem

There are a few happy endings for shelter dogs...it isn't ALL dismal; as I've portrayed in my earlier poems.

Robin Loving

Sometimes the words flow like a murder of crows. They've held my secrets for the past 65-years. And sometimes they repeat them back to me, and laugh. more…
