Analysis of Good Thriller, how to catch the thieves?
Doug Blair 1951 (London)
Art thieves, copyists.
They set up bogus gallery
Bring in lots of junky prints
And a few masterful copied
Pieces from the greats.
Almost indistinguishable.
Would take a Lab
And special lighting, chemicals
To spot the bluff.
Then comes hasty advertising
In places courting big money
fancy boutiques, theatre, race track. Casinos.
Steak and lobster eateries.
Australia at her finest.
Folks come, browse,
Ask stupid questions.
Flash around
Their cheque books.
Sale gets made.
Most likely of a Munnings.
Depicting beautiful horses
In situation.
Shaking of hands.
Slimy smile from proprietor.
Exit with precious wrapped package,
But it’s a copy!
Ten minutes later He’s on the phone.
Laying out schedule and location
For three weeks hence.
With two crafty thugs
Well paid for the Burglary
And recapture.
And resale eventually.
Filing cabinet has files
Of lists.
Cases, locations, subject art pieces.
Closed or open and pending.
Bastards all.
Will do most anything
To protect their scam.
Our protagonists three
Artists and horse people
Are hot on the trail.
(Good stuff, writer
Dick Francis.
