Analysis of And So It Begins
Lisa Campbell 1966 (Ohio)
You don’t have to say anything
I know it’s me
I’ve been hiding it
I have been denying it
All of the emotional damage
You can’t see
Always so put together
And appearing to be happy
But underneath the make-up
Are scars from the break-ups
My favorite perfume
Hides the scent of self-inflicted wounds
I have a lot of baggage
Been holding on to it so tight
Wearing it, carrying it
Like splinters of the true cross
Always burning the candle at both ends
Trying to live in the present
While being haunted
By past lovers and friends
I take my pain one piece at a time
I build a pyre
The deeper I dig
The bigger the fire
Seconds turn to hours, months and years
Sifting thru the heart ache, feelings and tears
Ego, anger, the denial, don’t want to hear it
All powerful attacks on my spirit
And so it begins
The work, the purging
I feel lighter, almost reborn
A new version of me is emerging
