Analysis of Mawlai Stan bos's Barber Shop Blues
Mawphniang Napoleon 1993 (Ri Bhoi)
In Mawlai Stan bos's barber shop, I sat with dreams in my head,
Tired from longing for my love, who was in Odisha far ahead.
The barber, with his shears and combs, did wake me from my slumber,
And bade me make my head straight, lest I should be in a blunder.
But as I sat there, lost in thought, my mind did wander far,
To thoughts of my dear love, who was traveling across India's star.
I wondered how she fared, and if her journey was with ease,
And if she thought of me, as I longed for her sweet breeze.
For almost a month we'd been apart, and I felt the distance keenly,
For though she'd gone on journey, my heart was still with her completely.
I missed her smile, her laughter, and the way she'd hold my hand,
And I could not help but wonder, if she missed me as I'd planned.
In my dream, she'd been with me, and we'd been holding hands,
And she had smiled at me, with love in her eyes, like a band.
But alas, it was but a dream, and I was left to pine,
For my love, who was still in Odisha, with no end in sight to this line.
And as the barber trimmed my hair, I thought of her once more,
And how much I longed to be with her, and to see her at my door.
But until then, I must be content to wait and to miss her,
For my love, who was still in Odisha, was the one I'd cherish forever.

About this poem
The poem above presents a melancholic reflection on the speaker's longing for their significant other, who is currently traveling in Odisha, India. The setting of the poem is in a barber shop, where the speaker is awakened from a dream by the barber and is prompted to make their head straight. The speaker's mind then wanders to thoughts of their loved one and the distance between them. The speaker expresses their feelings of missing the loved one's smile, laughter, and touch. The speaker's dream, in which they were reunited with the loved one and holding hands, serves as a reminder of the longing for their physical presence. The speaker ultimately resigns themselves to wait and miss the loved one, recognizing that they will always hold a special place in their heart. The use of complex Elizabethan English vocabulary in the poem adds to the melancholic tone and evokes a sense of nostalgia and longing. more »
