Analysis of Going home

As the breeze hits my hair,
I walk down the same path
I so desperately desired.
Piece by piece,
It all crumbled,
not by choice,
but by fate.
The sound of the creaking wood
and the sight of the gloomy horizon,
parted by heaven and seas.
So quietly, but yet so full of despair.
“Why me?” I ask,
gazing into the twilight,
knowing that that’s
what had to happen.
It’s what was chosen,
and even though
I did not want to accept it,
I could not just obliviate.
Not in the state I was in.
Farewells ought to be harsh,
but these felt different.
They seemed to engulf me
with not only sadness,
but with hope.
Hope to see them again.

About this poem
This poem is about my realisation and decision of having to go home early during my exchange year in the USA. I got diagnosed with severe anxiety and panic attacks and could not keep on living like that without my family. But America was all I ever dreamed of, and the people I’ve met there have changed my life in so many ways. It was hard. And it still is, but this poem describes my walk down the same path that I walked when I first arrived in the US, to a beautiful lake with a mesmerising viewing area. It’s where I found peace. And I needed to again. I had to go back home, though I did not want to. It was needed. And even though there was a possibility of me being able to come back. I knew I wouldn’t see my friends for some time. And that’s where my hope to see them was born. more »
