Analysis of Demolishment of Our Innocence

Karl Constantine FOLKES 1935 (Portland)

Casualty of war
Our innocence demolished
Lost, stolen, buried
Sacrificed by rampant greed
Revealing sinful natures.

A child’s voice cries out
Hearkening us to listen
Pleading for mercy
Begging to end this madness
That takes the lives of children.

Hear now from Vova
Ukrainian refugee
Pleading for mercy
Read now his composition
To stop ruining this Earth.

FORBEARANCE:
“The power of silence
The power of loneliness
Left alone
In peace.

Doesn’t it make you …
Think …. sometimes?
Why?
What is this?
What the f- - k is happening!

Something so obscure
As our lives …
Seems so normal.

To question is strange
To think and wonder …
Is abnormal.

The green papers we use
To determine our worth
Is also our greed …
Ignorance —
And depression.

Humans are strange
What we own …
Have … or want
Determines the very meaning
Of our existence.

We have ruined the Earth
To s- - t
We could fix it …
Now …
Later …
Or even before.

And the innocence of a person
May ask, why?
Finding the answer
Is the very reason
For the demolishment
Of our innocence.

The little time we have on Earth
Is being used
In such a devilish way
Ruining s- - t dead
Just for the sake of money …
Status — and fame.

Greed and selfishness
Have no boundaries
Here …
Never have.”

About this poem

On July 19, 2022, I composed and posted online a poem entitled “Vova, A Ukrainian Refugee Child Poet,” in which I referred to 13-year old Vova Ovcharenko, now residing in New York under the auspices of refugee status, along with other family members, as “a child of freedom” being sheltered by New York’s Lady Liberty. This three-stanza, five-line, 5-7-5-7-7 metered extended tanka poem, entitled “Demolishment of Our Innocence,” takes a line from Vova’s untitled composition (which employs a vocabulary of raging warfare suggestive of rampant destruction by violence) as a means of amplifying the devastating horror of bloody warfare on the psyche of children, like 13-year old Vova Ovcharenko, robbing them of their childhood innocence without mercy and reminding us, oh so bluntly, that we, as presumptuous moral Homo Sapiens, as Vova suggests implicitly, all fall prey to The Seven Deadly Sins of Pride, Greed, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Gluttony, and Sloth. I have taken the liberty of providing Vova Ovcharenko’s untitled composition, appended to my own composition, with the title of “Forbearance” since it seems to capture the courageous restraint shown by a 13-year old Ukrainian refugee, a survivor of childhood trauma occasioned by warfare exposure. May Lady Liberty truly ennoble him as a child of freedom.
