Analysis of The Love of My Life

Karl Constantine FOLKES 1935 (Portland)

The love of my life:
The treasure of poetry
A dream come true
Bearing sacred messages
From the depths of the psyche

The love of my life:
The poets of yesteryear
Now brought back to life
Like Shakespeare, Milton, and Scott
Like Shelley, Byron, and Keats

The love of my life:
Browning, Tennyson, and Gray
Commingling with me
Renown names of literature
Distinguished by their letters

The love of my life:
The acquaintance of writers
Their quill still not dry
 Bleeding the passage of time
With indelible imprint

The love of my life:
Poets, painters, musicians
Artists of all kinds
Linking what’s past with what’s new
To brighten the mind’s landscape

The love of my life:
Those with imagination
All are inventors
Showing what is possible
Creators of what can be

The love of my life:
As transformers of the old
Artists are rebels
Offering what is novel
To take us somewhere higher

The love of my life:
All artists are like children
They thrive on changes
Innovators of the new
Of that which is possible

The love of my life:
A poet ever dreaming
To awaken us
To that which we can become
Awakened souls with new selves

The love of my life:
A human soul awakened
Like lotus flowers
Symbols of resurrection
Enlightened — now rejoicing.

About this poem

Like the lotus flower, growing out of muddy waters, yet rising above its murky environment, and blossoming majestically to open each of its petals, one at a time, in the passage of divine passing, so blooms and flourishes the human soul, each one in its own time, awakened to flourish and sparkle by the fertile imagination of a poet, a writer, a painter, a singer, and all other artists and philosophers, who dwell among us only to elevate us to higher spheres of what is possible for each and all of us.
