Analysis of DNA: Gateway to Our Future
Karl Constantine FOLKES 1935 (Portland)
A cardinal chain.
Holding human legacy.
Called the DNA.
Having many pioneers.
Those who have made history.
Consider Mendel.
The “Father of Genetics.”
Eighteen Sixty Six.
A new vocabulary.
“Recessive” and “Dominant.”
Eighteen Sixty Nine.
With a new discovery.
Known as the “nuclein.”
Isolating molecules.
Is Friedrich Miescher.
Becomes prototype.
What today is DNA.
The human bloodline.
All from a cell nucleus.
The “marrow “ of human life.
Eighteen Eighty One.
More progress is made.
By Albert Kossel.
A German biochemist.
To formalize the process.
That the DNA.
Is a nucleic acid.
And the nucleic.
With five nitrogen bases.
Comprises the DNA.
This discovery.
Grants Kossel the Nobel Prize.
The five bases named:
Shorthand: A-C-G-T-U.
The “Building Blocks” and bases.
Adenine, the first.
And Cytosine, the second.
Then there is Guanine.
Which is followed by Thymine.
Finally, by Uracil.
These five building blocks.
Discovered by scientists.
By biologists.
Building blocks of DNA.
Building blocks of RNA.
Eighteen Fifty Two.
Again more progress is made.
It’s Walther Flemming.
Research in cytology.
And study of chromosomes.
Investigations.
Systematically made.
Of the chromosomes.
Lead to a new theory.
About our inheritance.
The Nineteen Hundreds.
Two other biologists.
Working together.
Named Boveri and Sutton.
Advanced chromosome studies.
Fundamental is.
Boveri-Sutton research.
To DNA work.
Chromosomal theory.
And to genetic studies.
In 19-0-2.
“Recessive Inheritance.”
A human disease.
Is helped by Mendel’s research.
For medical solutions.
Nineteen Forty Four.
Yet a new discovery.
Oswald Avery.
With a profound science claim:
“DNA transforms the cells.”
Properties of cells.
Are radically transformed.
Radically changed.
Not by the protein in them.
But by DNA.
It’s Nineteen Fifty.
And time of Erwin Chargaff.
His discovery.
DNA has its causes.
Linked to our inheritance .
His discovery.
Known today as Chargaff’s Rules.”
States explicitly:
“Double-stranded DNA.
Varies among the species.”
Late Nineteen Forties.
With Barbara McClintock.
Her discoveries.
The genes have mobilities.
Calling them the “jumping genes.”
That these “jumping genes.”
Can move on a chromosome.
With vitality.
It earned her the Nobel Prize.
In Physiology field.
Nineteen Fifty One.
Rosalind Franklin’s research.
In X-ray studies.
Crystallography research.
Of DNA photographs.
X-ray images.
Revealed the helical form.
Of the DNA.
Later, all to be confirmed.
Researched by Watson and Crick.
Nineteen Fifty Three.
The double helix structure.
Is known to mankind.
Published by Watson and Crick.
Showing ladder-like structures.
Like stairways to God.
Designed with double helix.
DNA is Source.
A gateway to our future.
Our stairway towards heaven.

About this poem
Since the dawn of time science, philosophy, theology, mythology, and other disciplines of study, have labored at developing a better understanding of the creation, composition, design, welfare, and future of Homo Sapiens. However, it is in the field of modern science and medicine, particularly in the various fields and branches of biology, including zoology, botany, microbiology, ecology, ethology, biochemistry, biophysics, and especially in the field of genetics, that fairly rapid, even outstanding advancements, have been made in science in the last 150 years. This poem, “DNA: Gateway to Our Future,” is a poetic reporting of some of that progress, and of some of the pioneers in science, both men and women, who have paved that gateway to our future. more »
