Analysis of Human Flight of Fancy

Like fireflies that dance
effortlessly, majestically,
In the darkness of the night;
one moment seen.

shimmering, quivering,
In celestial brilliance.
darting back and forth,
like little watchmen.

bearing tiny green lanterns.
seen for a wee moment.
and, oops — alas, no more.
disappear, oh — I know not where.

indeed, perhaps, to some other sphere …
so now — we humans,
echoing the primitive urge.
the thrust of Mother Nature.

with our own lightheartedness.
searching, seeking some evergreen,
with sweet delight of fancy,
take wings of heart.

take airborne wings.
and fly, fly, fly away.
to some other haven.
alighting there.

human fireflies in seasonal dance.
In fanciful seasonal dances.
alighting there, with sweet delight.
with seasonal flights of fancy.

About this poem

Like the seasons that come and go, like actors prancing up and down, and on and off a stage, like the ebb and flow of a river, like billowy clouds afloat in the sky, like the sun rising, and later setting, like a squirrel scurrying at Springtime, and hibernating at late Autumn, so do we humans dance in different rhythms with the seasons. This poem was written during a winter season when, dressed in layers of thick clothing, many northern folks left their cold abode and, like birds in flight, took off and sought warmer habitats. As I meditated on this seasonal ritual, I observed how all of nature partake of such similar activities. Together, with all living species, under the canopy of Heaven, we sing the same songs and dance the same dances. We are One with nature. This short poem, “Flight of Fancy,” describes how we are all in it together, even as our Planet Earth is in perpetual heavenly dance with all the planets of the universe.
