Analysis of I am so Honored

I am so honored.
By the company I keep.
Birds of a feather.
My companions cheer me.
Writing their ode in verses.

In celebration.
Many languages expressed.
Much honor given.
A staff of comrades writing.
Writing their odes in verses.

It was my birthday.
Nineteen Eighty Six the year.
June the twentieth.
My friendly colleagues writing.
Writing their odes in verses.

With your permission.
I share their words of praises.
And their sentiments.
These, my bilingual comrades.
Writing their odes in verses.

Their poem’s title.
Sung to the tune of a song.
‘Karl The Genius.’
The song, “La Cucaracha.”

About this poem

On June 30, 1986, thirty six years ago, my colleagues at New York City’s Office of Bilingual Education of the New York City Public Schools, celebrated my birthday with a wonderful surprise by together composing a poem, “Karl The Genius,” to honor me as their own “House Poet.” The first line of their poem employs the hyphenated capital letters P-P-S-S, followed by the numbers 217, referring to the abbreviated name of the bilingual unit and the specific room that housed the unit at 131 Livingston Street in Brooklyn, New York at Borough Hall. I have embedded within square brackets their composition, employing the format of an extended Japanese style Tanka poem to do so. In this manner, it is my intention to honor them with the same gusto and vigor that they have honored me.
