About this poem

“YUGEN:” Things and occasions that evoke mystery, the magical, awe, immeasurable joy, and wonder, often leaving one speechless. In traditional aesthetics, the Japanese word “yugen,” pertaining to one’s profound awareness of, and sense of Oneness with, the universe at a given moment in time , and which is inexplicably deep, too mysterious to be explained in words, leaving one breathlessly silent, evokes such an experience of the ever essence of all that is divinely magical. Mount Fuji, Fujisan, especially at a time of Golden sunset, leaves its beholder with such a precious experience, often captured in waka, haiku, other forms of Japanese poetry, the performing arts, literature, and painting. This haiku poem registers the epitome of yugen; that Silence is Golden!
