Analysis of The Glass Jar

Vincent Parker 1948 (South Ozone Park, NY)

The Glass Jar
The cylinder had a mysterious appeal
and my arm dove in, up to the elbow
Searching for the most exquisite piece
to delight the most basic of senses
The one with the worst consequences
like tooth decay or mortal sin

Reflections of color through the glass
 presented such a trivial task
Asking for the time working for the dime
to the drag of a numbing mind
Seeking satisfaction of an unfulfilling kind
lost in the sensation of powerlessness

Temptation of the visual scene comes
insidiously to the point of obsession
Claiming all the different points of view
to the mask of all perception and yet
unwilling to release the hold and not
be lost, is that this jar is missing it’s lid …

“Every object, every being,
Is a jar full of delight.” _Rumi
