Analysis of Awaken Humans
Please bless me;
And do not force me,
To be an awakened human.
Let me be
As happy as I can be,
As the inhumane.
For what do I need
My own living heart.
Why must I cry for
All the dying humans at large?
Keep me away from all
The grief and sadness.
Let me live alone,
Surrounded by all my madness.
Did I not always ask just
For my greed alone?
Far more wealth, I know,
Than my needs condone.
We have already created
So much destruction.
Ruining your world
Through all our inventions.
There are still a few
Who are disgusted by this madness.
Dying slowly and painfully,
Yet made greater;
Through accepting even sadness.
They are so immersed
In the enjoyment of their sufferings.
Shedding heartfelt tears
As their benevolent offerings.
Sharing the anguish of others
Who are sad;
Awaiting their own deaths
Living and dying as good, not bad.
Why do they suffer with
Their emotionally-charged feelings?
Why do they not seek happiness?
As selfish beings?
Yet they still pity us
While we are destroying it all.
Embracing their end
With suicidal hope
As You call.
We think we are happy,
Living with emotions dead.
Savaging all, and ignoring
Any self-doubts
Which enter our head.
Enjoying ruining our children
In brutal sadism;
While awakened humans cry
Bitterly in their monotheism.

About this poem
I was one of the four sons of Mehta Lekh Raj Datta, Chief Engineer of an ice factory in India. I spent my childhood (1946–48) running around in Panchkuia Road, New Delhi. There was a Harijan colony (Colony of Untouchables), where Mahatma Gandhi was leading evening prayer and concluding with his famous discourses on unquestioned humanity. I did touch his feet and massage his bare legs, as child’s play, not realising then that my emotions would be permanently coloured by the encounter. more »
