William E. Mays

Adrian, MI, USA

William Mays began writing poetry in the 1980's, near the end of a career as a minister and a college professor. Now enjoying emeritus status, he finds fulfillment in expressing his thoughts through poetry, while keeping an interest in church and professional education organizations. In his view poetry allows one to express the deepest feelings of one's mind, heart, and soul, and his poetry has been published in newspapers, various poetry journals, as well as volumes by The National Library of Poetry. That poetry is best that captures the rhythms and beauty of life.

The Hidden Power of Freedom

To have the right to dream
and to follow it each day
until some tiny part of it
is you in every way
gives zest to all of living
and lets you dream some more
'til at last you are near heaven's gate
as your thoughts lift up and soar.
This, then, the freedom that I seek
for you and all mankind
the spark of real achievement
capturing heart and soul and mind.
To strike off lingering chains of doubt
look out on a new day
where freedom holds you to a task
that asks your best in every way.

Wide Prairie Sky

Wide prairie sky
blue as an azury sea
carrying armadas of white
sailing forth on a stiff March breeze
why so blustery and cold
so near to springtime's thaw
let the warmth of lengthening days
bring joy to one and all.
Wide prairie sky
here 'neath your broad canopy
you give me a sense of the vastness of space
and how small I truly must be.
Still as the heart thrills to a cadence divine
you tell of worlds yet to be
where spirit shall be forever enthroned
and Mind answering mind sets one free.

Climbing

Climbing
a way of life for many
some summit always ahead
not an Alpine peak or Mount Everest
but always a challenge and dare
to rise from the depths to new found heights
give fresh form to a pioneer dream
as mind, heart, and soul shout
Eureka! I've made real a part of that scheme!
It may be a vaccine to conquer disease
or a tune to set hearts aflame
a well-written tale to make another's hopes glow
caught up in some helpful scheme.
Still, no matter how great the conquest
It is but a way-stop, you see
since those who must climb see new heights to scale
daring never to fail nor retreat.
