I was born August 31, 1924 in Taylor County, West Virginia. I am
the oldest of ten children. I was raised up as a farm boy. I went to the
tenth grade. Dad got down with Arthritis, so I quit school to take care
of the farm work. When I was eighteen, I went to the Army, but they turned
me down because they said I had a bad lung. Years later I found out that
I had spots on my left lung which was caused from Scarlet Fever.
So I went to work in the Coal Mines. I started dating my wife in 1943,
then two years later on Sept. 18, 1945, we got married. We bought a small
farm and raised five children. We had milk cows, hogs and chickens, and
a large garden. In 1994 we celebrated our 49th wedding anniversary.
Then Dec. 4, 1994, my wife passed away. I had never written a poem
in my life until after my wife passed away. I had trouble sleeping,
so I would write poems. I am just a retired Coal Miner with 38 years in
the Coal Mines. The National Library of Poetry has published five of my
poems.
