Both Haiku and Tanka are traditional short forms of Japanese poetry, which started a half millennium ago in the former, and a millennium ago in the latter. Yet both are still very popular among Japanese people including the young's, especially in Tanka because it's a freer form than Haiku. Today Tanka has been fundamentally modernized not only in the form but also in the style of expressions, whereas Haiku's has changed little. In my English Haiku and Tanka, I tried not to destroy the original rhythms too much. Sadayo Takizawa, born in Saitama, Japan, 1948. |
