Both Haiku and Tanka are traditional short forms of Japanese poetry, which started a half millennium ago in the former, and a millennium ago in the latter. Yet both are still very popular among Japanese people including the young's, especially in Tanka because it's a freer form than Haiku. Today Tanka has been fundamentally modernized not only in the form but also in the style of expressions, whereas Haiku's has changed little. In my English Haiku and Tanka, I tried not to destroy the original rhythms too much. Sadayo Takizawa, born in Saitama, Japan, 1948.

Out of Matter

'Just a love', do you say?
There are things much more
important than love.
You say?

Blazing in a flame,
you've taken off into the world.
wonderful jump!
Leaving me behind.

Are you happy?
What's the point to ask?
You'd answer, 'we weren't
seeking for our happiness.
It's out of matter'.

A Block of Stone

On a mountain peak
cloud comes out, flows away.
Do you still remember the scenery of
so many thousands years ago?

Sea in its back
stone still stands
solid,
stacked on the Earth.

Everything has own season, says one.
Does a stone have a season, too?
A block of granite doesn't answer,
Winter field

Autumn

Kot kot kot,
Seagull knocks
Morning window.

Picking words
One by one
Night falls

Stone
Stands still
Telling nothing.

Scarecrow,
Standing in a field
Laughing at!

Rainbow
Running closer
Running away

Winter

Grave stone
Wearing a rosary
Christmas!

Camellia white
Blossoming in a corner
Fisherman's church

Orion hangs
Over La Pulente,
Saturday night!

Colour purple
Dream burning,
February's sea.

Sea emerald
St. Brelard,
Abaroni's bay

Spring

Cherry cakes
With my friends
Doll's Day.

Cherry blossoms
In the sky,
White moon

To be a girl
At least today.
Third of March.

St. Auban
Miles long,
Tedious march

Just a bird
Top of the tower
University campus.
