Edward Durand

Ireland

I was born 21 February 1974. I am studying philosophy in the University of Ulster at Colorawne. I previously studied philosophy in the Milltown Institute in Dublin. (My philosophy dissertation will be a psychological interpretation of Zen Buddhism). In my poetry I express my philosophical ideas and moral views (which can be socialist, anarchist or environmentalist). I write for a small fanzine called "Muse" that's printed in Dublin.

Contradiction

Natural law is a contradiction
A poetry competition is a contradiction
Spiritual discipline is a contradiction
Useless beauty is a contradiction
Theft of property is a contradiction
Authoritarian communism is a contradiction

When natural food is a contradiction,
then we're fucked.

Lois

The child must lead, 'cos pure of eye,
he cannot hear the reapers cry
Fear drives denial, weakness of pride
We cannot find no place to hide.
To love the things that never die
Helps if at first they are alive.
I can't be me, I have to put
my money over brotherhood.
My crust cuts out the beautiful
fear hinders life won't be fulfilled.
Reach out to rings from carousels
and fall and die, denial felled.

Outside is Life

Wrapped in cloth, can't feel the wind.
It rains, yet I remain outside,
Not trapped within cold hard finite walls,
the mind reduced to finity,
no life no hope, no freedom to roam.
Instead I stay outside,
a place of great beauty.
The trees hibernate
Yet the beautiful chaotic intricacy
of the branches reaches out to the sun,
absorbing its positive energy.
And the people stay inside,
in the abstract constructs called reality.
The river flows, pushed to the sea.
Don't want to wear a hat,
I want to feel the air,
but I'm supposed to have a lid.
Outside, there are no doors,
just clear perception of the world.
