"Lin From New Jersey"

Garwood, NJ, USA

This poem was my first attempt at poetry. I wrote it out of frustration. People are suffering and the U.S. Dept. Of Defense wanted to down play symptoms and label it "Stress." The poem relates to the suffering of our veterans and their families. I feel the Gulf War Illness could be similar to what is causing Agent Orange problems for Vietnam Veterans.

WHAT IF?

What if  GWI-CFID is an infection,
silently infecting the best of U.S?

What if it spreads to
    family members and to others?

What if they spread it in
classrooms, offices and collages?

What if blood donors pass it on?

What if it causes other infections to flare?

What if it becomes an epidemic?
What if no one will listen and people die?

What if exercise and hard work make symptoms worse?
What if it never goes away?

What if it is more silent than cancer?
What if someone knows the TRUTH and ignores or hides it?

What if many societies are affected?
What if only some of these are true?
Can you live with your conscious?
It was dawn when she pulled out into the open sea.
