June Davis

Middleton, Wisconsin

A native of Michigan, June graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, acting in stock companies east and west until something called a war interrupted her plans. After marriage and motherhood, she turned to advertising and journalism as news editor/photographer for the local paper. Now retired, June gardens, paints landscapes and "scribbles" poetry. "All of which helps me to stay sane," she says, "If indeed I am."

Carpe Diem

Life is a grab bag,
Never asks that it be fair.
There are no guarantees
anywhere.
Plus and minus, a measure
of talent
And perhaps you make it
on balance.
As for the good life
syndrome,
You lose some; you win some.

Life is a grab bag
No refund, no exchange,
Just a self limited range.
Born into a time a place,
You consume time, expand
space,
Grabbing all you can
of life's repast.
Carpe Diem while the
daylight lasts.

A Christmas Carol (revised)

'Twas the night before Christmas
When all through the land
Women who have baked and
Packaged and planned
Await the morrow, like the
Garlanded tree,
With the hush of nostalgic
Expectancy.

There was that year all the
Gifts were home made.
("It's the thought that counts,
Not what you've paid")
Of course, grandma's scarf
Could have fit a giraffe
And the glaze soon came
Off Aunt Jane's carafe.

Ah yes, it's Christmas when
Our feet are sore
From traipsing around in
Store after store.
Yet our heats know the
Joy strangers' smiles have
Wished us
As we meet in passing:
A MERRY CHRISTMAS!

New Year's Eve Alone

"Should auld acquaintance
be forgot..."
You were always there for me--
now you're not.
You were my strength,
To every challenge you
said "I Will" --
Now you won't.

You were everything a
person should be,
Sympathetic to the point
of empathy,
You made every pain
bearable,
Eery dream possible
even probable --
now you don't,

You kept every promise,
fulfilled every vow --
until now.
Till death do us part
You were there for me --
Now you're not.
