In
his book, "Writing Poetry," John Holmes states "Poetry is not a part-time
thing. Poetry is not a hobby, a little talent with bead work or whittling,
or a happy skill with sketching in one's off hours. Poetry is not something
you do after you've finished something else; it's what won't let you finish
anything else. Poetry demands of its practitioners a major effort; a major
ability, sustained, perfecting and triumphant. The greatest artists are
the happiest human beings of all time. They know a joy beyond anything
anyone else can know: They have used their gift." P.S. The above statement
points to the impact, influence and force that poetry has had upon me.
