Jean Nabhan

Hobart, Indiana

I wrote poetry as a child but didn't start writing again until I entered a National Library of Poetry contest. Since then, I have enjoyed being a part of The National Library of Poetry's Anthology Series, and being included in their publications. I studied elementary education at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas. I am an active member of Augustana Lutheran Church. My hobbies are painting in oil and acrylic, and various crafts. I like to incorporate in my poetry all the aspects of life I love: God, family, nature, children, and love of country. These subjects I consider my legacy of life.

My Enlightened Heart

So many things enlighten my heart,
To tell you about them --- where do I start?
Hearing a melody that I love
And the gentle cooing of a dove.

Seeing a friend engaging smile
And realizing life is so worthwhile
Thinking about my favorite cake
And knowing what a pleasure it is to bake.

Enjoying a meal with my family,
Is always such a blessing to me.
Sharing a special hour or two
And being there alone with you.

Gazing across the lake so blue,
And being aware of the morning's first dew.
Feeling the warmth of summer showers
And watching the growth of my garden flowers.

Always knowing of God's love for me
And all of His glory I constantly see.
These few things are just a part
Of the many joys that enlighten my heart.

Beauty

A bird soaring upward in the sky
Winging its way to nest near by.

The dawning of a glorious new day
And the gorgeous colors of its display.

The robins first song will ever be
A time of expectation and beauty to me.

The cooing of a baby after being fed,
His sweet contentment as you tuck him in bed.

The first snowflakes that gently fall
And cluster near my garden wall.

The smile of a child, his face all aglow
Is the ultimate in beauty, all of us know.

The colors of the autumn leaves
And the panoramic splendor that it weaves.

In this world there's so much beauty to see,
It's found in the eye of the beholder --- you and me.

Thrice Blessed

I've watched each one of you through the years,
Heard your laughter, seen your tears,
Witnessed your ever changing ways
And traveled through each passing phase.

I've marveled at the heights you've attained.
And the confidence in self you have gained.
I'm proud of the courage through trials you've shown
And the strength of character that has grown.

How can I ever to you impart
The love I hold within my heart?
Thrice blessed --- always, you will be
A source of light and joy to me.
