Ingeborg von Finsterwalde

Poughkeepsie, New York

Born and educated in Germany, Ingeborg has been living in the United States since 1957. Calling herself a jack of all trades, she has tried her hands at marathon running, painting, ceramics, sewing and collecting anything that is collectible. However the last few years she has devoted her time to writing poetry. She and her husband Alfred have traveled extensively all over the United States, and some of her poems reflect her sincere love and admiration for this country. Five of her poems have been published in various Anthologies by The National Library of Poetry.

On Roanoke Island

It was a summer day not long ago,
I walked through the forest on the Island of Roanoke.
To my great delight, there was not a soul in sight.

All I saw was the sky and the sea,
sea gulls flying, rapture awaiting me.
Spears of sunlight broke through a haze,
right by the old fort, that mysterious place.

It was then, I felt, I should not fail
to unravel a secret, of long ago,
what happened to the first colonists of Roanoke?

I summoned my courage, to call out his name,
the only person to know of the theme.
"Manteo", great Chief of the Island of Croatoan,
please shed some light, onto what seems a terrible plight.

Of the young mother Eleanor, who carried a child,
so precious and fair, all through history
We have known her as, "Virginia Dare".

Silence, the call of a Jay, a whispering breeze
and I went on my way, past an old Oak Tree covered with moss.
It was then that I knew I would fail to unravel
the mystery of long ago, perhaps it was better so.

Forever Good Bye

Torn from the safety of mothers womb
into a world of light, sound and pain.
Thrown together with life's expectations
on a raft into the human sea
floating and falling drifting and dreaming
along the way...Good Bye.
Mountains to climb, and fences to scale
adrift through the fog never to fail,
to find safe harbor, a beacon of light
chattering teeth many a night...Good Bye.
Caressing hands and kisses so sweet
warm my heart, and many good deeds.
But adventure is calling,
the current is pulling my heart...Good Bye
Out into the maelstrom, the unknown zone of life.
Searching, testing the strength of each faltering step.
Kind fortunes bestowed, along the sun lightened path,
gazing at blue skies and stars...Good Bye
The pendulum is swinging,
remember the singing, the echoes are counting time,
you rush and you dawdle...Good Bye
Nighttime is falling, it's dim light is calling to rest.
You gather your harvest, and pay your dues,
paid close attentions to obvious clues...Good Bye
When time has come to write my epitaph,
I shall be ready and not sad.
Have tasted the wine, all in good time,
and now I say...Good Bye.
