Hazel O'Dell

Walton, New York

My husband Bill and I were married in January 1943. We have seven children, eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. I think the best advice for life is to live your faith and develop a good sense of humor. I began writing while I was in school. Fortunately for me, I had a teacher who recognized my ability and steered me to use it. I have had works published locally and at this time I have a collection of my poems for sale. I call it "I've been thinking". It is in the second printing. We come this way only once, so let's make this world a better place because we have been in it.

Surprise

The rainbow in the summer.
The flowers in the spring,
The snowflakes of the winter
Protecting everything.

The colors of the autumn.
The smell of newmown hay.
The robin song and dew drop.
The starry night and day.

The bird, the bee, the cactus.
The moon, the stars, the sun.
The peaceful gift of twilight
When tiring days are done.

When everything was in order
For all the world to see,
Then from a tiny bit of dust
God's love made even me.

I Went For A Walk

I went for a walk in the forest.
The trees were stark and bare.
The wind moaned through the branches
And l wondered if God were there.

I went for a walk in the forest.
The snow lay white and deep.
Each branch was wrapped in ermine
Tucked in for a long winter's sleep.

I went for a walk in the forest.
New life was everywhere.
I felt the sense of nearness
And I knew that God was there.

What Next?

Timmy and Jim are brothers.
Jimmy is Timmy's twin.
Timmy looks like Jimmy
And Jimmy looks like him.

Jimmy lost his mittens.
Timmy lost his hat.
Timmy broke his pencil
And Jimmy broke his bat.

Jimmy cut his finger.
Timmy skinned his knees.
Jimmy cried in sorrow
When Timmy sat on a bee.

Jimmy sneezed and sniffled.
Timmy coughed and blew.
Two boys alike yet different
In everything they do.

And so through life they traveled
Taking all its bumps.
First Timmy had the measles.
Now Jimmy has the mumps.
