Gladys Haimes

Sturgis, Mississipi, USA

I was born on a farm in Winston County, Sturgis, Mississippi, and was very active in farm life and school activities.I graduated from high school and Molers Beauty College, which was among the older beauty colleges. Their rules were strict and thorough. After finishing my instructor's course, I taught cosmetology approximately 25 yeaers in Tennessee and Texas. When I retired, I returned to my old home place in Winston County, Mississippi, where I now reside.I have two sons and two grandsons, who are all successful business men. Incidentally, one is a journalist. While teaching I became interested in people and their activities, which inspired me to write ''When I Lay Down My Comb and Brush'' and other poems. If I struggle to write a poem, I just lay it aside until it ''writes itself'' and I start another.I recommend writing verse to anyone. You don't know until you try. It will pass away time otherwise wasted. Again I repeat ''you don't know until you try, try and try again.''Good luck and happy ending.

Graduation Day

He has triumphed the rough and rugged road
and the obstacles that lay therein.
He has shown the world the heavy load
could not get the best of him.
Good luck, my son, may God's blessings
be yours in the years to come.
No mother has prayed more sincere prayers
than has your one and only mom.
