Esther Ortega-Lage

New York, New York, USA

Esther Ortega-Lage, poetess, was born in Havana, Cuba; my parents were professionals, my father a lawyer, my mother a teacher. I obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy at Havana University (PhD); a Master of Music, Piano, Slophein and Theory from the Conservatory of Music, "Carlos Alfredo Peyuellade; teaching music in Primary level; and Spanish Language in Secondary Schools, by competition, until I left Cuba in 1967 as thousands and thousands of Cubans left the Island because of the Communist government. I came to New York, where I got my Master of Sciences of Education, at Long Island University, working as a teacher in these two levels of Education. I retired in 1986. Publishing conferences, poems, and books include "Light and Shadow," "The Moon in Scorpio," and "Leaves in the Wind," in English. The first was written in 1988, the second in 1994 and the third in 1996. Still, I am writing poetry. I have many awards from different poets associations, competitions and the very reputable, The National Library of Poetry, in Washington. The theme in my poetry is "The philosophical side of the human life."

The Night

Looking at the sea, the waters now swaying
in the shaking of waves, wishing don't coming back
to the same shores full with brambles and stones
that rudely are thrown up to the ripples of the foams.

The night goes and returns where my soul seeks refuge
in the peace of the wind and the whispering mist,
a child in his mother's arms, tries to warmth cheerfully,
and the old man, finds placidness in the tides of the sea.

The night takes its solace, strolling in the gloom,
the loneliness, the moon, the spell in the night void,
advises that something travels from a great far away
by telling us to stay, until comes the sunrise.
