Bonnie S. Garfoot

Monticello, Wisconsin, USA

Bonnie has been writing poems since high school. She is a bookkeeper and tax preparer. She is secretary of the women's guild at her church and secretary of her homemakers group and a member of the cripple creek cloggers. Bonnie and her husband, Wayne, have four children. Bonnie has had poems published by the National Library of Poetry. Poetry helps me relax and get away from it all, but the greatest joy is when one of my poems touches the heart of someone reading it.

The Boy I Once Knew

There was a boy that I once knew,
He hugged his mother as he left for school.
He was so brave, he didn't cry,
He only looked back to wave good-bye.
His mother smiled, and held back her tears,
As she says good-bye to his little boy years.
She tried to be brave, and tried not to cry,
As she returned the wave of good-bye.
His mother knows that boys grow fast,
And moments like these will not last.
There will come a day when he takes a wife,
And he will start a different kind of life.
The days quickly turned to years,
And his mother said good-bye through loving tears.
Her time of pain was now at an end,
By they knew they would see each other again.
It has been hard to say good-bye,
He wasn't brave or afraid to cry.
He had loved his mother with all his heart,
And it hurt so bad to be apart.
This little boy, now a fine young man,
Now holds another woman's hand.
As they say their vows of eternal love,
His mother watches from above.
There was a man that I once knew,
Hugged his son as he left for school,
He was so brave, he didn't cry,
And only looked back to wave good-bye.

Our Home

Please excuse my house today,
The kids and I played all day.
We played house and had a tea,
I bounced my baby on my knee.
I don't care that the dishes aren't done,
The kids and I had some fun,
The beds aren't made, and that's ok,
They will wait for another day.
Children grow so very fast,
I want these moments to always last.
Cleaning house will always wait,
I'll play with the children before it's too late.
My children are most important to me,
And that's the way I want it to be.
So don't you criticize my way of life,
I'm a very happy mother and wife.
Our home is a home in every way,
Because we take time for our kids and play.
