Alyce M. Nielson

Brooklyn, New York

In 1993 I discovered I could write poetry. I use worlds to paint pictures of what I see. Sometimes my poems are words of wisdom, prayers or anecdotes about animals. I'm a member of the International Society of Poets and have been interviewed on the radio broadcast, Poetry Today. My poems are published in anthologies printed by The National library of Poetry and Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum. My Favorite activities are: walking, Tae-Kwon-Do (I'm a black belt), and Tai Chi. I'm a grandmother and I enjoy cooking, baking, playing the organ, knitting, crocheting and needlework.

The Raven

The raven walked up the handrail to where he would hop onto the low
branch of the tree. He turned around, cocked his head, then looked at
me. A drop of rain fell on his beak. He shook it off and then he glanced
toward the sea. A wall of rain was coming our way so he walked deeper
into the tree. Me? I got as wet as I could be.

Melting Glaciers

As the glacier melts; clean, clear, cold water
swiftly runs down the rocky creek bed; spills
over the side of cliffs as water falls; scrambles
over pile of boulders as rapids and flows under
bridges of snow until it reaches the river where
it continues to race toward the sea. Many times
on its journeys the melted glacier will quench the
thirst of woodland creatures and feed small
plants and trees.

Words are Treasures

Words are treasures that should not be misused.
When we choose to express ourselves words are
the tools that we use. Words can tell a story about
the past, spread the news of a current event or
express hope for the future. So keep your words
positive, upbeat and kind. Don't let the negative
creep into your mind. Choose your words with
kindness, compassion and care, so that they can
bring joy to others and not despair.

Most Southern Tip

Close to the southern most tip of the United States stands a wind farm
where three-blade windmills drone on and on. The continuous whine is
an eerie sound. On a dark moonless night no one would hang around.
